The 1990 Ford Taurus SHO


The SHO engine is a 3.0 liter DOHC V6, Horsepower: 220 hp @ 6200 RPM with a torque of 200 lb-ft @ 4800 RPM. 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds! The SHO utilizes a dual runner intake, with butterfly valves. It uses long runners for low end torque, and opens up the short runners for a top end charge! It gives a similar feel to Honda's VTEC, but is more satisfying!


I was an owner of this 1990 Ford Taurus SHO up to 2003. I modified some things such as the stereo system, suspension (Eibach springs, Koni struts, and Cross-Tower strut braces). My current mechanic/friend was KAR Performance, located here in Santa Cruz, CA. As of Feb. 26, 2003, the car had 262,526 miles on it with the same engine (no work to the engine itself was done), original tranny. It paid for itself. At the end of 2003 I donated the SHO to Cars for Sight. It had 285,832 miles on it and started to run bad. So I bought a new 2003 Nissan Altima SE thinking it would be cheaper then restoring my SHO. I wish I had kept it for a weekend race car. I miss the torque that the SHO puts out.

Ford's Taurus SHO (Super High Output) model had an eleven-year run. In 1989 it was introduced with a Yamaha-built 3.0L V6 and only with a 5-speed transmission available. By the end-of-the-line in 1999 Yamaha was working with Ford on building the SHO's 3.4L V8 motor. Only a four-speed automatic was available in the later years. Annual sales averaged about 7,000 to 8,000 SHO's a year, or about 2% of the total Taurus production.
